About

In 2013, Jaha Dukureh founded Safe Hands for Girls, a survivor-led women’s rights organization dedicated to eradicating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and all forms of gender-based violence. Through awareness-raising, advocacy, youth empowerment, and community outreach, our mission is to shed light on the harmful effects of FGM, to actively work towards its elimination, and to provide essential support to survivors.

At Safe Hands for Girls, we are committed to effecting positive and lasting change both at the community and institutional levels. By empowering and educating women and girls about FGM, we strive for a future where young women and girls will no longer face the risks associated with this harmful practice. Moreover, we endeavor to create a supportive environment where survivors can heal and overcome the effects of FGM.

In 2025, Safe Hands for Girls launched a new international program, ‘Regenerative Hubs’, to educate women farmers in regenerative agriculture and to create new streams of income, with the aim of enabling economic empowerment for women in rural communities, which is the key to ending abusive practices such as FGM, child marriage and domestic violence.

With a strong vision of a world free from the threats of FGM, Safe Hands for Girls remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice, equality, and empowerment for all women and girls. Together, we are shaping a brighter and safer future for generations to come.
